GARLIC - Allium sativum (Liliaceae)
Garlic is known for it's
pungent smell and taste and is an ideal herbal medicine as it is completely
safe for home use and a powerful treatment for a host of health problems.
It counters many infections including those of the nose, throat and chest.
It also reduces cholesterol, helps circulatory disorders such as high blood
pressure and lowers blood sugar levels, making it a useful dietry addition
in late- onset diabetes.
Key constituents:
Triterpenoid saponins,
including about 5% aesin and a mixture of glycosides, Polysaccharides about
50%, Coumarins including aesculin, Flavonoids, Tannins including
proanthocyanidins, Fixed oil 2 to 3%.
Feeding:
Granules, Powder & Organic
Flakes: The amount is just suggested at 25g per 100kg bodyweight, (a 16.2hh
is about 500kg) daily divided between the feeds. This rate is ideal for
general maintenance, but if the horse will take it and there is a health
problem more may be beneficially given as it is almost impossible to over
feed garlic when the horse has the choice! 1kg will last a 500kg horse
about 8 days.
