Equilibrium massage pad and massage mitt now in stock

Massage for horses brings huge benefits – whether your horse competes in sports or works hard or just enjoys a gentle life of occasional pleasure rides.

Horse massage helps to promote relaxation, improve flexibility, maintain mobility and suppleness and also builds and strengthens the bond of trust between horse and rider.

Two products that have earned rave reviews from riders – amateur and professional – are the established Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad and the newer, handheld, Equilibrium Therapy Massage Mitt.

The Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad

We are delighted to say that we have both products back in stock – but they will fly out fast.

Chatting to Laura Cutter, marketing manager of Equilibrium, the other day she told me how owners of horses of all ages and types love both the massage mitt and the massage pads.

Equilibrium launched their massage pad about four years ago. Owners loved the convenience and comfort of a product they could put on their horse’s back and deliver a relaxing and therapeutic massage to the whole area from the withers to the quarters.

Laura said that the pad was put through its paces in clinical trials by Myerscough College who carried out ‘arch and dip’ tests and concluded there were improvements in mobility and stride length of horses which used the pad over a 12-week period.

“Dressage riders have told us, and the internet forums, that their horses feel looser and more supple after they have used the pad,” said Laura.

Equilibrium Massage Mitt from Pegasus Health

She added: “As a company we are always looking to respond to our customers and look for new innovations. We launched the Equilibrium Therapy Massage Mitt in the last year after customers who had bought the massage pad told us they loved it – but they wanted something which would allow them to reach muscle groups in the neck, the quarters and places that the pad didn’t cover.

“Owners of young horses have told us the mitt is great for building a bond between horse and owner too.”

The massage mitt is popular with participants in all equestrian disciplines, Laura said, but she added that they had seen a rise in purchases by riders competing in endurance events. The handheld massage mitt is so easy to carry and use.

Osteopaths and physiotherapists treating horses and ponies for specific conditions say that the massage pad and massage mitt are great for owners to use between therapy treatments to improve muscle tone and flexibility.

It’s a great time of year to consider trying horse massage with one (or both) of Equilibrium’s products, especially if bad weather means your horse or pony isn’t being turned out very much.

You can currently buy the massage mitt, battery, charger and case from Pegasus Health for £90.25 (including VAT). The massage pad costs £237.50 – a great investment when you consider that you can use this product every day.

NatureBute – the new name for Boswellia for horses

NatureBute the new name for Boswellia for horsesThere’s a new name on the Pegasus Health website for our popular Boswellia for horses supplement – NatureBute®

But inside the tub – with its new eye-catching label – you’ll be pleased to know it is still the same tried and trusted product that has brought pain relief and eased inflammation for thousands of horses and ponies.

Boswellia Serrata – a 100% natural painkiller and anti-inflammatory – produced from the gum resin of the Boswellia Serrata tree – is often called ‘nature’s Bute’. This is a reference to the equine medicine phenylbutazone (‘Bute’) because many owners and trainers have found Boswellia for horses to be a viable alternative to this drug.

So our new name of NatureBute®  seems appropriate for this best-selling product which offers a gentle, natural solution to ease inflammation and pain in hard-working equine joints.

NatureBute® is also gentle on the gastrointestinal tract and safe for long-term use.

Read more, and order this cost-effective equine supplement today at the NatureBute® page on the Pegasus Health website.

Fight back against Cushing’s disease with Cushy Life and Agnus-castus

Cushing’s disease brings misery to many horses and ponies – and their owners – and many will be battling with this painful and unpleasant condition now – as symptoms often first appear in the autumn.

Equine Herbals Cushy Life helps fight Cushing's DiseaseEquine Herbals Cushy Life  is a supplement that provides nutritional support for normal hormone balance and many owners testify to the difference it has made.

It is produced by New Zealand herbalist James Hart – whose innovative liquid herbal range we first wrote about on this blog a year ago.

Common symptoms of Cushing’s disease include:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Coarse, dense, curly coat
  • Heavy sweating
  • Laminitis
  • Increased appetite
  • Lack of energy
  • Dull eyes and coat
  • Lack of immunity leading to other illnesses and infections

Cushing’s disease is often found in horses in mid to late life, although equines as young as seven have been known to develop it.

A small benign tumour on the pituitary gland – which controls the production and release of hormones responsible for many basic body functions – causes Cushing’s disease.

There is no cure for Cushing’s – but it can be managed and the symptoms improved.

Cushy Life is made from the liquid extract of the Chasteberry – also known as Vitex Agnus-castus.

Pegasus Health also sells pure Vitex Agnus-castus in the form of dried, ground Agnus-castus berries which we also recommend. Pure ground dried Vitex Agnus-castus berries from Pegasus Health

In recent years the Laminitis Trust carried out a trial to examine the impact of Vitex Agnus-castus on cases of Cushing’s disease in some 120 horses and ponies. They found that all owners reported improvement in some areas with their horses becoming more active and less depressed. Many also shed the excess hair they had been carrying.

Owners reported that their horses became more energetic and interested in their surroundings, were less depressed and began to enjoy life again.

The UK Horse Journal also ran a similar trial on a smaller group of 10 horses and ponies aged between 13 and 25 years who had either been diagnosed with Cushing’s or were showing classic symptoms of the condition.

They said that response was “rapid and dramatic” with excess hair being shed and energy levels rising in around three weeks on average.

Introducing our new, improved biotin for horses

Biotin for horsesBiotin, from Pegasus Health, just got even better with a new formulation which we are so excited to share with you.

Biotin Plus – new and improved – is a great way to give your horse or pony the goodness of Biotin plus lots more besides.

For some years, horse owners have come to recognise the benefits of Biotin for horses. Biotin is a B-complex vitamin first discovered in the 1930s when it was found to help people with brittle nails and some skin complaints,

Soon it was discovered that Biotin for horses could be a major factor in improving hoof quality as well as skin and coat.

There is strong evidence to suggest that horses which already have dry, brittle hooves and cracked feet – or those that are shod frequently or that pull their shoes off regularly or suffer from recurring laminitis – will benefit from taking Biotin for horses.

Now, acting on the latest nutritional information, Pegasus Health has formulated Biotin Plus which combines Biotin with Zinc, Copper, Methionine, MSM, Rosehips and Lysine for even better nutritional support for hooves, coat and skin.

Horse hooves and hair are made of a dense protein called keratin, and the amino acids, nutrients and minerals in Pegasus Biotin Plus for horses are all believed to help ensure that keratin grows strong and durable.

High-quality and cost-effective, prices start at £16.95 for a 2.5 kilo tub. Larger sizes are available. Find out more on the Biotin Plus product page where you can also click the further reading tab to find out more about the benefits of the ingredients of Biotin Plus.

A competitively priced probiotic for horses

Yea-Sacc probiotic for horsesMany horses can benefit from taking Pegasus Health Yea-Sacc ® 1026 – an effective probiotic for horses which helps to stabilise the right natural balance of ‘good’ bacteria in the intestines.

Probiotic for horses Yea-Sacc®1026, by Pegasus Health, is a live yeast culture based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 1026.

For some years now, universities and equine research organisations have been investigating what Yea-Sacc®1026 can do and they have come to the conclusion that it can increase the amount of energy released from a horse’s diet and made available to fuel muscles.

This makes Yea-Sacc®1026 a useful equine supplement for competition and sports horses. But it can also benefit young horses that are still growing, older horses, lactating mares, poor do-ers and horses that are suffering a stomach upset or are prone to colic.

Studies have shown that probiotic Yea-Sacc®1026 can improve the digestion of protein and the absorption of phosphorous and calcium which are all important for young, growing horses and lactating mares, as well as horses whose lifestyles include high levels of work and exercise.

This high-quality, branded probiotic for horses supplement is competitively priced by Pegasus Health at £19.95 for a 1 kilo tub; £46.50 for a 2.5 kilo tub (that’s a saving of £2.45) and £67.83 for a 4 kilo tub (a saving of £11.97).

Horse riding – the new surfing?

Not so long ago, surfing was the hobby the stars were all keen to be seen trying.

Now it seems horse riding has become the chic pastime of the moment.

If you take the glossy high fashion magazine Vogue as a barometer for what is ‘in’ then horse riding has to score particularly highly right now.

Recent editions this year have featured a host of stylish women revealing their passion for horse riding including television presenter and style icon Alexa Chung and Burberry model Edie Campbell, daughter of former Vogue fashion editor Sophie Hicks.

Horse riding has always been favoured by British royalty and Zara Phillips and her mother Princess Anne are famously accomplished horsewomen.

But in Europe, as reported in the pages of Vogue, Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco, was sponsored by Gucci last year and competed wearing an exclusive equestrian wardrobe, designed for her by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini.

Looking effortlessly elegant, star of the Twilight vampire saga Kristen Stewart has also been frequently snapped off duty enjoying spending time on her horse.

But if you want to combine the two hobbies, the Extreme Horse Riding website demonstrates the art of Horse Surfing.
