Anise for horses, famous for its liquorice-like flavour and smell, is good for the relief of abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating and gas. Anise for horses is complimentary with
Fennel Seed for horses in preventing ‘griping’ - sharp pains and grumbling in the bowels. Sometimes the two herbs can be confused with each other as they both have the distinctive liquorice flavour which comes from the aromatic compound Anethole - a phytoestrogen - which they both contain, as does the completely unrelated Star Anise plant. Anise has mild anti-parasitic qualities and is also anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.
Anise for horses contains:
- Essential oils - of which the main one is Anethole - which gives it the liquorice flavour
- Fatty acids
- Protein
- Carbohydrates
- Flavonoid glycosides
- Small amounts of Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Zinc
