Description

Vervain for horses is an excellent stimulant, or tonic, that helps to calm down nerves and soothe anxiety.

It works well on its own or when taken along with Chamomile for extra calming benefits which can be taken legally when horses are entering competitions.

It also improves liver and digestive function and can promote milk production, but it should not be given to pregnant mares because it can make the uterine muscles start to contract.

Vervain for horses contains:
  • Bitter iridoids - verbenin and verbenalin

Did You Know?

It is the bitterness of Vervain - produced by the Bitter iridoids it contains - that makes it work so well as a digestive aid for horses.

Some horses process anxiety through their skin. They can be sensitive and twitchy and very jumpy or nervous without necessarily being upset or afraid as such.

Horses that appear to be constantly agitated, and which are always fidgeting, moving and sweating heavily, may benefit from Vervain for horses. These nervous behavioural traits are often found in racehorses, or those with racehorse breeding.

Vervain can also be a very useful herb for helping your horse to adjust to new surroundings.

Many herbalists prescribe Vervain tea as a stimulant, astringent, diuretic and to reduce fever by encouraging sweating. The herb is also believed to be an effective sedative or tranquiliser and an anti-spasmodic that reduces cramps and muscle pains.

The ancient Romans held all species of the Vervain in high regard. They saw it as a ‘sacred’ herb with which they sanitised and purified their homes and temples. They also knew about its therapeutic benefits and used it to treat many different illnesses and conditions ranging from diarrhoea to snakebites.

Other names for Vervain include Verbena and Pigeon's Grass.

Vervain grows wild all over Europe, North Africa and also in China and Japan.

It was imported to North America from Europe by the Pilgrim Fathers.
