 Echinacea is held to be the most effective way of detoxifying the circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems. It also works well on skin complaints and wounds because it has antiviral, antibiotic and antibacterial properties and can help with tissue repair.

 Echinacea Tincture is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach lining without depending on the equine digestive system - giving a clear advantage over cut herbs.

Echinacea Tincture contains:

• A 1:2 ratio of herb to liquid
• 45% (or one part) Echinacea purpurea to two parts liquid - of which 45% is ethanol (also called pure alcohol) and 55% pure spring water
• No additives

Feed to:

• Performance and sports horses - to increase the red blood cell count and benefit performance
• Horses with urinary or respiratory infections
• Horses fighting airborne viral illnesses
• Horses under stress or other circumstances that may weaken their natural immunity to illness

Echinacea is also known as Purplecone flower and it has been a popular supplement with herbalists and nutritionists down the centuries for the way in which it supports the immune system to ward off infection and illness.

Some evidence indicates that Echinacea may shorten the length of some viral illnesses.

The name Echinacea comes from a Greek word ‘echinos’, meaning hedgehog. This refers to the prickly scales of the flowers' central cone.

Herbal tinctures have been made for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. They are stable, safe and easy to take and their overwhelming advantage is that they allow the herb to be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream through the lining of the stomach. This makes it faster-acting than the alternative cut herb Echinacea which has the same health benefits - but is slower to act as it has to rely on the body’s process of digestion to take it into the bloodstream.

Tinctures also have the advantage of a much longer shelf life than that of dried herbs.

Herbal tinctures are made by extracting the herbal components of the plant through a mixture of water and alcohol.

Pegasus Health Echinacea Tincture for horses uses the goodness of the entire Echinacea plant - both the roots and the parts of the plant which grow above the ground.

The University of Maryland Medical Centre says that its tests have shown that the roots have high concentrations of volatile oils while the parts of the plant above the ground usually contain more polysaccharides. These are the substances which are said to activate the immune system.

The alcohol pulls out much of the herb’s active ingredients. Many herbs are quite tough and the alcohol used needs to be the correct type in order to help break down and absorb the active ingredients.

Adding a small amount of boiling water to Echinacea Tincture is recommended as this will evaporate the small amount of alcohol it contains before the tincture is mixed with the feed.

Like the cut herb variety of Echinacea, the tincture can offer the same perceived benefits of increasing both the number of, and the size of, red blood cells - as demonstrated by some research studies in Canada. This would mean that more oxygen can be transported around the body in the red blood cells bringing benefits in performance for sports and endurance horses.
