Seaquim® Equine uplifts its seaweed as a living, breathing, green seaweed plant directly from the sea, says Ian Robertson, Managing Director of the Glenside Group. By contrast some seaweed suppliers land their seaweed on beaches where it can be tainted and contaminated by sand, ash and bacteria.

The benefit that Seaquim® Equine has over other seaweed suppliers is its processing methods which are supported by stringent quality control procedures. The seaweed is first given a fresh water wash before being ground once. Indirect heat is then applied which gently dries the seaweed but also ensures that none of the valuable amino acid or vitamin content is damaged. Other seaweeds are heated directly which destroys valuable nutrients.
 
The seaweed is then ground and sieved again. It is guaranteed dust-free and handled in a human food grade factory where it meets the organic standards of the UK, Europe and the USA.

Seaquim® Equine contains every vitamin, mineral and amino acid that your horse, or pony, needs for optimum health. It can compensate for any deficiencies in trace elements which may occur in a normal diet. Seaweed has been fed as an equine supplement in Scotland, Ireland and Norway since at least the 5th century.

Seaweed stores some of its vitamins - including Vitamin A - better than dried grasses.

Among the many other vitamins that seaweed contains is B12, which is essential for growth but is not commonly found in other vegetable matter available to horses.

Animals that have access to the shore will feed on growing seaweeds showing a natural instinct for a food that will benefit them.



Seaweed contains a wide variety of concentrated protein and healthy carbohydrates while also being low in fat and calories.



Amino acids are the building blocks for protein and Seaquim® Equine contains 20 different amino acids, including all the essential amino acids that a horse needs but cannot produce within its own body.

More than 60 minerals can be found in seaweed for horses including Calcium, Chlorine, Potassium, Nitrogen, Sodium, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Chromium, Cobalt, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium and Zinc.
 
The vitamin E content of seaweed helps the fertility and reproductive performance of horses, but seaweed as a supplement is not recommended for pregnant mares if they are already receiving supplementary feeds that are enriched with iodine.

The iodine content of Seaquim® Equine will stimulate an underactive thyroid gland. Iodine is a specialist mineral. It is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones to keep the horse's metabolism stable.



The horse's estimated daily requirement of iodine is just 0.1 part per million*(ppm), or 1 - 2 mg per 500kg horse per day, and it is possible for horses to be iodine-deficient on a normal diet.



Most horse feeds contain between 0.05 and 0.2 ppm (dry matter) of iodine, but some can contain as much as 2 ppm, depending on the soils in which the feed was grown.
