Pegasus Everyday Electrolytes for horses replenishes essential salts lost through sweat, so helping a horse's recovery and performance.

Working horses lose essential body salts (electrolytes) in sweat, and horses in work are unable to replenish these salts from a normal balanced diet. An hour’s moderate work can cause a loss of 50 g of electrolytes, and these must be replaced for optimal health, performance and recovery. Losses are much greater in hot and humid environments.

Everyday Electrolytes should be fed every day to all working horses and ponies, to ensure maintenance of correct electrolyte levels. The amount should be increased according to how much the horse sweats during exercise, either in training or competition.

Everyday Electrolytes contains:

  • Aniseed and fenugreek flavouring
  • Calcium chloride
  • Magnesium sulphate
  • Potassium chloride
  • Sodium chloride

Feed to:

  • Racehorses
  • Sports horses
  • All horses and ponies in regular exercise
  • Horses working in hot weather
  • Horses after digestive disturbance or inconsistent droppings
  • Horses whose electrolyte levels have been affected by illness
  • Horses whose electrolyte levels have been impacted by medication

Everyday Electrolyte supplement for active horses
Electrolytes are minerals dissolved in the horse's bloodstream and both intra- and extra-cellular tissues, which are essential for many critical roles around the body. They need to be available to the body in the correct ratios for good muscle co-ordination, healthy heart function, good performance and stamina, nerve function and the processing of wastes.

The correct balance of these ionised body salts (positive and negative) is vital to a horse's wellbeing and its ability to train well and perform to the highest standards.

All exercising horses, especially those competing in sports or endurance events, exercising in hot weather, or who have diarrhoea will all lose electrolytes from their bodies and if these are not promptly replaced they will tire more easily and their performance will be impaired. Supplementing with Everyday Electrolytes is a rapid and effective way to replenish the body's natural and vital mineral reserves. Everyday Electrolytes will also help prevent poor recovery after exercise and counteract reduced stamina, fatigue, appetite loss and support good muscle health.

Electrolytes for race horses are lost from the body through urine, saliva, sweat, mucus, bile and intestinal tract secretions, but it’s in sweat that the greatest losses take place. Horses can lose up to 50 g of electrolyte salts in an hour’s moderate exercise. Substantial amounts of sodium, potassium and chloride are lost, along with much smaller amounts of calcium and magnesium.

If horses have high sweating rates in sustained exercise - e.g. endurance training - large amounts of both salts and water are lost, they become less inclined to drink and a vicious circle is created leaving the horse exhausted and dehydrated. By supplementing with Everyday Electrolytes the horse will be encouraged to take on water and performance will improve as a result of the horse being well-hydrated with a good balance of electrolytes in the body tissues.

There is no evidence that sugars such as dextrose and sucrose enhance the uptake of electrolytes in the horse’s gut, and although these compounds can help consumption of electrolyte solutions and muscle glycogen store replenishment, there is no benefit to having them in an electrolyte product that is added daily to the feed to replenishment lost body salts.
