Liver tonic for horses
Milk thistle for horses is classed as a herb, but it is also a type of thistle belonging to the sunflower family. For centuries it has been recognised as a useful natural support for the liver.

Milk thistle can be used to promote a healthy liver. Milk thistle is rich in antioxidants - many times more potent as an antioxidant than vitamin E - and it cleanses and detoxifies the body and helps stimulate new liver cell growth. Milk thistle can also be helpful to support kidney or pancreatic function.

The milk thistle is native to the Mediterranean regions of the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. Over the years it has spread to other parts of the globe too. Its name comes from the milky white sap which its leaves contain.

Milk thistle seeds have been used for around 2,000 years to support healthy liver function. Excessive amounts of milk thistle fed to horses may cause loose stools, but it has no known toxicity level.

A healthy, fully-functioning liver is the key to the body being able to expel toxins effectively. The liver removes toxins from the body before they can damage other organs, including the heart, blood vessels and skin. If the liver cleanse horses is not working properly then there can be major effects on overall health.

Milk thistle seeds contain several active constituents, but the main and most important one is the silymarin complex which includes three flavanoids: silibinin, silidianin, and silicristin.

Silibinin is the most active of the three and it supports the liver by stopping certain toxins from entering its cells. It also stimulates the regeneration of cells.

Silymarin protects the liver in a number of ways. It is able to bind to the outside of the liver cells and stops some toxins from getting inside the cells.

Silymarin aids antioxidant activity by helping cells produce glutathione which in turn helps to fight free radicals. Silymarin can raise glutathione levels by 40% and will also increase super oxide dismutase in the red blood cells. Silymarin can help cells to make new protein and in doing so helps those cells to regenerate.

I would just like to let you know that the Pegasus Milk Thistle we brought from you in April of this year, along with a huge amount of love and attention has saved our ponies life. Ringo is featured in this months Horse magazine under the vet case file section as we are so proud of him. He came to us with problems with his liver and along with the milk thistle and excellent feed he is now fully recovered. We are still going to buy the product as we believe it is worth it and lasts forever! We have been feeding him the 1 scoop a day and we are just about to purchase another one soon! So many thanks for a fab product.
