Vitex agnus-castus berries (ground into a powder for maximum bio-availability). No added bulkers or fillers.

Vitex agnus-castus is a powerful herbal supplement which is especially helpful for moodiness in mares caused by hormones, and for horses with Cushing’s syndrome (also called pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction or PPID).

Pegasus Vitex agnus-castus consists of the dried berries, or fruits, also known as chasteberry, powdered. It works on the pituitary gland to support the body’s endocrine system thereby supporting metabolic function. In this way it helps support vitality, normal coat shedding, balanced hormones, good immune function, a healthy circulation, healthy hooves and appropriate energy levels in horses with signs of pituitary gland stress and mares with hormonal imbalances.

Vitex agnus-castus is a natural nutritional supplement that supports the body’s endocrine system via the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. In this way, it supports the body’s normal hormonal activity and responses. It can be used long-term after a fast-acting course of either No Moody No® or Cushy-VX®.

Vitex agnus-castus AKA monk's pepper for horses - to give the herb its botanical name - is a large aromatic shrub that originated in southern Europe and produces small white or lilac flowers in summer. It grows along the banks of rivers in the Mediterranean and Central Asiatic valleys. It also grows in the dry and rocky terrain of the Italian and Greek coastlines. It is part of the vervain family of plants. Vitex agnus-castus contains flavonoids, iridoid glycosides and terpenoids.

After flowering and pollination, Vitex agnus-castus, or vitex for horses, develops small, hard, dark berries, about the size of peppercorns. The berries are dried and crushed to produce powder, or made into a tincture.

Historical uses of Vitex agnus-castus
Vitex agnus-castus has been used since at least the 4th century BC to support balanced human female hormones and help with menstrual cramps, mood swings and water retention. It is also said to re-balance hormones and increase milk production.

By around 900 AD Vitex agnus-castus was being widely used across the Middle East, especially in Egypt and Persia. In the 16th century, under the names chasteberry or monk’s pepper, it became popular with herbalists in England.

I have had my mare for 4 years now, and every spring/summer is a nightmare when she is in season. This year she reverted back into old ways of planting, scared of her own shadow, or just being mean with the other horses, or which ever person brought her in from the field. A work colleague suggested chaste berries, and I found Pegasus Health and Agnus castus supplement powder. I can't believe the transformation, nor can the farm owners where my horse in on livery. She is back to her usual self, and manageable, & everyone has noticed the difference! The livery yard are quick to remind me when my stocks are running low. I ring the Pegasus call line and its delivered to my home within 2 days, an excellent service.
